This started out with a lyric about a summer friend I had and the troubles he had with his girlfriend. The line: 'why can't you just grow old with Grace?' was my though upon his situation.
The song evolved evolved into something else. A commentary on beauty and beauty's perception, from the eyes of a person who loves their partner as the world made them.
Despite this, every time I sing that line I still think of my friend and his girlfriend, Grace. I never told them about the it, i probably still won't (unless they read this of course.)
As far as i know they are still together.
lyrics
Take the mask off
How do i know you've laughed before?
You're feet have walked a thousand floors,
i'd like to know what made you, you.
I love the creases.
Emotion left a gift upon your face
A thousand times that you say you're ashamed,
You'll show your looks, your soul, your age.
I don't care about the wrinkles, around your pretty face.
Why can't you just grow old with grace?
I don't care about the wrinkles, that surround your pretty face.
Why don't you just grow old with grace.
Why don't you just grow old with grace.
Drop the surgeon,
A knife won't fix what never really broke.
A thousand scars and oh, that wad of notes
Might change your looks, but it won't change you.
I'll still love you,
The you I know, won't need that fake facade.
Years on i'll still thank my lucky stars
That I'm yours, with all the edges.
I don't care about the wrinkles, around your pretty face.
Why can't you just grow old with grace?
I don't care about the wrinkles, that surround your pretty face.
Why don't you just grow old with grace.
Why don't you just grow old with grace.
With grace,
With Grace.

The first time i heard 'Shoeboxes' by David, i felt desperately touched. Such an expressionful, soulful honest songwriter who deserves more recognition than he gets. Joseph Lofthouse
